June 2026
The fields are steadily being filled with seeds and plants that we start in our greenhouse. We have a crew of 6 planting, weeding and harvesting the few spring crops that are ready. It’s been a wet and relatively chilly spring this year, but the plants are growing nonetheless. We sent soil samples away last fall to be analysed for mineral profiles of the various fields. This spring we added what was needed, with a custom recipe for each plot. One of the advantages we’ve seen this wet spring is the water infiltration capacity is much better than the last time we had a wet year (2020 - the year we lost 80% of our crops). This is very encouraging to us to see that we can improve our farm using organic methods that support life in the soil.
Spinach and radishes are ready!
This is one of three large plots that gets a cover crop every third year. This year it is planted in a rye and pea mix and will get turned into the soil this summer to increase nitrogen, build organic matter and feed microbes.
The potatoes have germinated well. Along the edges of the beds we’ve planted a cover crop of rye and peas. To the left there is the perennial cover crop of orchard grass, clover and alfalfa. Covered soil is our goal here.
We've started eating fresh from the fields and it is soooo good! Incomparable!
