Farewell
Many of you know already that the season of our lives as farmers is coming to an end, but we want to offer our official farewell to the amazing people that have been such an incredible part of our lives for the past two decades. These years have been so rich - full of community, deep learning, beautiful people and really good food.
We didn't see the end coming when we started the farm season this year, but there were too many factors at play deciding against our continuance to ignore. The weather was the most obvious one with unprecedented rains only 6 short years after the floods of 2020. We were set to break the pattern of debt this season with three strong markets, a big crew, and our fields in healthy shape after the many significant changes we made to our farming methods since 2020 in order to build a more weather resilient operation.
It’s important to say that we don’t feel like this has been a choice we made, but that we are responding to what life has put on our path. It has been heart-breaking to get here, but we have a strange peace with it, or at least we are less resistant to change than we were at the beginning of this change. There is an auction scheduled for the end of September to clear our farm equipment. Jenny has been hired as a full-time teacher, and James has a cabinetmaker job offer lined up in a local shop.
Even knowing that it would all end this way, we’d do it all again. Experiencing this life, growing good food, learning about soil, about community, about ourselves, and raising our kids out here - all these things are beyond the quantifiable.
We want to thank all of you that have been part of Sundog. The people we've worked with, the people we've fed, the people who have become like family. There is some kind of magic where good food is involved, and we’ve been so privileged to have experienced it.
With both love and sorrow, James and Jenny
